Meet our SRNT Rep, Pedro!

The Network for LGBT Tobacco Control is happy to be sending Pedro Haro-Arvizu from Hawai’i to the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT)  conference in Baltimore, MD.

Pedro Haro-Arvizu has worked in tobacco control in Hawaii for the past 7 years.  Initially, joining the staff of REAL, the youth movement against the tobacco industry, from 2002-2007.  In 2005, Pedro worked as a cessation counselor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and then joined the Hawaii Department of Health in 2007, where he currently is employed.  Additionally, Pedro has served on the Board of Directors of the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii, and is the current chairperson for the Cessation Advisory Group.  Through his work in the different programs, Pedro has provided outreach to populations disparately affected by tobacco, including ethnic minorities, people with low SES, youth and young adults, and LGBT communities.  Pedro has actively provided tobacco outreach for the University’s Coming Out Day, Hawaii’s Pride Festival, and has led projects in the Department of Health that focus on promoting the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline to through LGBT publications.  He has attended a National LGBT Tobacco Control Network training led by Scout held in Hawaii in 2008.  Currently, Pedro is leading projects within the Hawaii Department of Health to bring tobacco cessation to homeless populations, immigrant Filipinos, and people with mental illnesses.

Pedro graduated with a Masters in Public Health from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Fall, 2009, and is currently enrolled in at  to pursue a link between performance arts and Public Health.
